Book Review: Rey's Anatomy: Figurative Art Lessons From the Classroom

Rey's Anatomy: Figurative Art Lessons From the Classroom - 01

Rey Bustos is an art instructor who has taught anatomy for more than 30 years. This book covers a lot on anatomy and artistic anatomy. It looks like a textbook he has written so that he can use it in class, but text insightful and not dry like academic books.

This book has the usual skeleton and muscle structure overlay with all the part listed. There are also plenty of muscle structure overlay onto many figurative drawings, including those from Old Masters. Rey teaches anatomy in this way to how the muscles look in different poses, and how knowledge of anatomy is actually used in art. This book is one part technical and the other part artistic.

There are a few tutorials with step by step instructions, anatomy sketches with captions and many examples talking about how you can create lively figure drawings.

The text is written very conversationally, and explains how and why the muscles move in certain ways. The text is written in such a way that students can understand and remember easily how muscles work.

This book is insightful, certainly very informative, and more detailed than I expected. It covers a lot. The book is suitable for beginners to advanced artists, on its own or as a complement to other anatomy and figure drawing books.

Teoh, great review and photography as always. I cannot decide between this volume or Valerie Winslow's Classic Human Anatomy in Motion from a few years ago. What do you think (for an intermediate level artist)?

@P Banks
Valerie L Winslow's book is more of an anatomy reference book.

Rey Bustos' book is more of a figure drawing book although it has some anatomy reference as well.

If you're into figure drawing, I recommend Rey Bustos' book first. And if you find you need anatomy reference, you can get the other book later.
