Replacing single green pans with some watercolour mixing

Winsor Blue (Green Shade) mixes

I'm trying to replace single green pans in my watercolour box. That way I free up two pan slots for other colours.

The green colours that come with Winsor Newton watercolor pan sets are usually Olive Green and Winsor Green (Blue Shade).

In the picture above, the top are the mixes I created. On the bottom left, that's the Winsor Green (Blue Shade), and the bottom right is the Olive Green. The mixes are very close to the single pan colours and that's good enough for me.

Here are the colours you need to start with:

  • Winsor Lemon
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Winsor Blue (Green Shade)
  • French Ultramarine

These four colours are usually come in pan boxes, 12-pan set (such as the Bijou box) or more.

Winsor Blue (Green Shade)
Winsor Blue (Green Shade) is an interesting colour. It's a blue with a green secondary. The green comes out when you do watercolour mixes.

To get the Winsor Green (Blue Shade) lookalike, you mix Winsor Lemon and Winsor Blue (Green Shade).

To get the Olive Green lookalike, you mix Winsor Lemon with Yellow Ochre and French Ultramarine. There's still a hint of French Ultramarine in this mix.

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with how the mixes turned out.
