Book Review: The Art of Being an Artist: 150 days Inside a Painter's Art Studio

Bianca Berands is a fine art painter based in The Netherlands. She's known for her loose and expressive painting style, usage of collage and experimentation, and has her work exhibited at several galleries.

The Art of Being an Artist: 150 days Inside a Painter's Art Studio is a book that documents her creative process as she embarks on a new series called "Beach Life". This book was originally published a few years ago in Dutch and has recently been translated to English. The book's a self published large format hardcover with 200 pages.

In this book, Bianca shares her 150-day journey to create several paintings that features children playing on the beach. She shares her preparation which involves experimenting with various types of textures on canvas using a variety of medium, and not everything was created with brushes. There would be rollers, stencils, cling film and more.

I must admit I was a bit confused as what she was creating in the early days because they look like abstract art to me which is an art form that I don't really understand. But as the days progress, you can see how those abstract textures are actually used to create the background for the characters in the scenes.

The artworks are beautiful and interesting because of the mix of different techniques. And it was only towards the middle of the book where I realised that her paintings are huge.

There are many techniques being shared, including where she gets her inspiration. There are also several photos of her evolving studio which I'm quite jealous of because there's so much space and art supplies to work with. There are QR codes provided that you can scan to watch the painting process.

This book should appeal to painters, especially mixed media artists who like to experiment, mix and match media. A Kindle version of this book is also available on Amazon.
