Book Review: The Art of Soul
Here's a beautiful artbook for a beautiful movie.
The book's a 176-page large format hardcover published by Chronicle Books. It's the same format used for almost all the Pixar artbooks published over the years.
The book features the development and concept art for the film, character designs for the souls and humans, environment art for the Soul World and New York and some storyboards and colour scripts. Only
When I saw the movie at the cinema, I was intrigued by the design and art direction of the film. The concept art featured has some similarities to what's shown on screen but there's a lot variation. The art is the source of inspiration for the film. And it's interesting to see how the final look of the film is compared to the art.
Only downside to this book, just like other Pixar artbooks before, is the lack of text. There are just a few sentences talking about the important characters, environments. I'm pretty sure there's much more to be said about the production process. For that, you'll probably have to get the feature commentary that comes with the film, depending on where you buy it.
This is a nice artbook to have for fans of the movie and Pixar.
