Book Review: How to Draw: A Comprehensive Drawing Course by Ian Sidaway and Susie Hodge
How to Draw: A Comprehensive Drawing Course is a 352-page beginner's guide to drawing authored by Ian Sidaway and Susie Hodge.
This book is for beginners who have no knowledge of drawing or what to draw with. It starts off with an introduction to the various drawing tools and paper. These are very accessible tools such as pencil, pen, brushes and watercolour. Most projects in this book feature dry medium.
The subject matter covered in this book are animals, buildings, landscapes, people, portraits and still life. Each chapter has several step-by-step projects to follow along. The reference photo provided is big enough to see, thankfully, and the instructions are clear and concise. The different projects shows off different approach, styles and techniques you can use for drawing that certain subject. At the end of each project is an alternative drawing drawn in a different style, showing you that there's no single way to draw. You can also use the tips and hints to take on the same subject again, now with a different style or tool.
There's no better way to learn drawing by going through all those hands-on practical projects.
The official retail price of this book is US $24.99 but you can get it cheaper on Amazon or Book Depository. At that price, it's really worth the money because this book is thick and packed with lots of content. Highly recommended.
