Book Review: The Art of George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire Volume 1 & 2
The first thing to note about these two artbooks for A Song Of Ice And Fire is they are not related to the TV series in anyway. The first volume came out in 2005 and there was a reprint in 2010. Volume 2 came out in 2011. If you get the 2010 and 2011 editions, they will have the same brown covers.
The art featured in the book are by Fantasy Flight Games for their board and trading card games. They are primarily character art with the occasional environment art. The illustrations are arranged by characters, Houses, and land. The text are just excerpts from George R.R. Martin's fantasy novels.
It's interesting to see how the different artists interpret the characters. The quality of art is good overall but varies in quality, volume 2's is better. Some of the artists featured are John Howe, Charles Vess, Stephen Youll, Donato Giancola, Tomasz Jedruszek, Martina Pilcerova, Michael Komarck and others.
