Book Review: The Art of the Travel Journal by Abbey Sy
The Art of the Travel Journal is a beginner's guide to travel journaling, documenting your travel experiences visually. The author Abbey Sy is an artist from Philippines who's currently based in Berlin, Germany. She loves travel journaling and is really good with hand lettering art and has authored several books on that and calligraphy. You can see more of her art on her Instagram page. And she has a Youtube channel too.
This book is for those who are already interested in travel journaling, urban sketching and sketchbooks. The book is actually more on ideas and doesn't teach drawing techniques.
The book starts with the history of travel journaling, the materials needed and ideas on documenting your trips. There are ideas on how you can turn your journal into stories, how you can collect ephemera, create collages, plan your pages, things to draw, and staying creative. These are ideas you can use even when you're walking around in your neighbourhood and not really traveling.
The book is insightful and inspiring. There are many wonderful journal pages and guest artists featured such as Jane Lee, Julia Morotchenko, Melissa Tan, Helen Colebrook, Job Airam, Yulia, Christine Herrin, Chelsea Park, Mits N, Eri Salcedo and Caylee Grey.
