Book Review: The Big Kopinski Volume 1
Big thanks to publisher Éditions Caurette for sending over this book for this review.
Karl Kopinski is an illustrator born and based in Nottingham, UK. He has worked for movies, game studios and is known for his portraitures and character designs.
The Big Kopinski is a huge 296-page hardcover that features his character sketches, drawn mostly with pencils, and a few in colour. He has a certain way to breath life into the characters he draws with simple strokes of graphite. I love the way he creates textures with shading and hatching. All the characters have a very solid and grounded look and feel to them.
Some of the sketches were published several years ago in paperback format by Karl himself but they have been sold out. So now, they are republished here in one thick convenient volume. These sketches look like they come right from his sketchbooks. The paper used in this book is the cream off white matte 130gsm paper that shows off the pencil art really nicely. All the artworks are reproduced at high resolution and you can see the grain of the paper. Lovely.
You can see more of Karl's work on his website and Instagram page.
This book is available for sale on Éditions Caurette's product page. It's priced at 70 Euros, not including shipping.
