Book Review: CG Galaxy I: Top Chinese CG Artists and Their Works
Fantastic artbook featuring Chinese artists
CG Galaxy I is an artbook that features Chinese artists who are into creating concept art for games. Having said that, most of the works in the book are actually side projects of these artists. It's a 192-page paperback. The layout is nice and pictures are used big.
45 artists are featured. Many of them are from the Chinese CG website called Game798 Studio, somewhat like CGSociety or CGHub.
The artworks are fantastic, beautiful. There are character designs, environment art and 3D models. Since they are all Chinese artists, you'll see the occasional Chinese style character art.
Environment artworks is a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi. There are some Asian architecture featured, but not a lot. I always find them interesting because I don't see them often. These artists really know how to light their scenes.
All artists have a short profile provided while only handful are interviewed. The interviews are quite short also.
Overall, it's a compilation of great art. Definitely worth checking out, and also check out CG Galaxy II which I've reviewed before this book. These two books are released months apart, one in August and the other in November 2013.
