Book Review: Food Swings: An Illustrated Travel Journal by Doodlenomics
Special thanks to Yasra Khoker, aka Doodlenomics, for sending me a copy of this sketchbook to feature here.
Food Swings is the first travel sketch journal published by Yasra Khoker, a food illustrator and sketch artist, from India (if I’m not wrong).
It looks like a self published book. 52 pages. Paperback.
Collected within the book are lots of sketches of different food intermixed with street scenes from Telangana, Goa and Mumbai. The sketches are drawn with pen, ink and watercolour and they document the food seen and eaten during the trip. Sometimes recipes are included, other times there are restaurant receipts.
The artworks are nicely drawn in a loose and vibrant style. There isn’t much text except for the captions for food and the occasional text on the travel experience. The layout of the content is a bit busy though. It’s like everything’s filled to the brim of pages. Some white space would have been nice.
I enjoyed the art and the text. As the book only has 52 pages, I wished there were more to read about the food and places.
