Book Review: Garden Jungle (cut out book) by Hélène Druvert
Here's another cut-out paper artbook by Helene Druvert and it's absolutely beautiful. The earlier one I reviewed was called Ocean
This picture book was originally published in French and has been translated to English by Thames & Hudson. The story is about how a boy was following a butterfly (printed in with fluorescent ink) and goes into a jungle to discover other things. The jungle is literally multi-layered as multiple pages have been designed and cut to let you peer through the jungle. So you can basically look through the pages to see the back of the jungle, and through the pages you can look at all the beautiful cut outs. When you reach the back of the book, you can look through the jungle again, this time from the back to the front.
The cut out pages are probably cut by laser. The cut is so precise. The art looks so good. Much of the design relies on silhouette design. So you get to see the trees, branches, plants with their silhouette cut out and layered above other pages. Each page uses different coloured paper and a limited colour palette of white, black and fluorescent inks are used to guide your eyes to where to look. There are a lot of details and each page is worth spending the time to really take in what you see.
This is a beautiful and fascinating book. It's a picture book so it's probably for kids. And it's a good book for kids because you can explain many things you will see in this jungle.
