Book Review: Gardens of Awe and Folly: A Traveler's Journal on the Meaning of Life and Gardening
Here's another travelogue sketchbook by Vivian Swift. Gardens of Awe and Folly is a bit different from her two earlier sketchbooks When Wanderers Cease to Roam and Le Road Trip: A Traveler's Journal of Love and France. It's different in the sense that the focus is on the places while in the other two books, the focus is on her traveling experience.
In this book, she visits nine gardens from different places around the world, namely Paris, Key West, Marrakech, New Orleans, Long Island, Edinburgh, London and Rio de Janeiro.
Collected are watercolour sketches of each garden, the stories behind them, the different types of trees and plants she saw and the people she met. Who knew there is so much thought when it comes to designing gardens and choosing flowers and plants that adapt well. It's also quite interested to see gardens with different themes.
Reading the book and looking at the images evoked a sense of relaxing calm in me.
It's a nice book for those who want to slow down and smell the flowers.
