Book Review: I Am New York by Carlo Stanga
This is the third artbook in the city illustration series I am. The first was I am Milan and second I am London. The publisher is Moleskine.
I'm actually a big fan of Carlo Stanga, an architect and illustrator from Italy. I love his art and style. There's creativity, life and action. You'll see a lot of that in I am New York
This is a 112-page paperback artbook featuring illustrations of New York City. The text is written from first person perspective, in this case from NYC's perspective. There's a lot of interesting things and history about NYC that's for sure, but the highlight of the book is obviously the beautiful illustrations of Carlo Stanga.
All the drawings are very detailed. It's difficult to imagine how much time and effort actually went into creating them. The art is gorgeous. I love the use of lines, negative shapes, overlapping elements and composition. There's a lot to see. Sometimes I just study his art to get some inspiration.
His style looks like mixed media art but it's actually hand drawn first, scanned and colours added digitally later. I know because Carlo Stanga has a course on Domestika that talks about his process.
This book is incredibly inspiring. Highly recommended to everyone who loves art, urban sketching and or NYC.
5 out of 5 stars.
