Book Review: Komorebi: The Art of Djamila Knopf
Djamila Knopf is a freelance illustrator based in Leipzig, Germany. She is well known for her anime-influenced characters and backgrounds. She's definitely at the level where she can illustrate Japanese anime movie posters.
This is another one of those illustrator books crowdfunded on Kickstarter by 3DTotal Publishing. 2,790 backed the book. I guess this can be considered part of the illustrator artbook series from 3DTotal.
This 152-page hardcover artbook features artworks from the last three years. The book shares her influences, artist journey, workflow and creative process.
The artworks are beautiful. Komorebi, by the way, is Japanese for "sunlight filtering through trees". So obviously there are a few illustrations showing off komorebi. Her aesthetics, taste and colour use are so good. If you like Japanese anime art, and I don't mean the extremely stylized characters, this is a book you should check out.
In addition to the many coloured illustrations, there are also some black and white artworks, and a few sketches. Finally, there's a full length step-by-step tutorial on creating the cover art, another tutorial on painting trees, and some tips on using art fundamentals to improve your art.
This is an insightful and inspiring book. Highly recommended.
