Book Review: Mauritius Sketchbook by Sophie Ladame
This beautiful sketchbook with watercolour art from Sophie Ladame and text from Yvan Martial was originally published in 2004. It was reprinted in 2011 and 2019. This is one of many sketchbooks published by Editions Didier Millet.
This book is about Mauritius, the island nation in the Indian Ocean. It covers the interesting history of the place and gives hint as to why Mauritians love their homeland so much.
The watercolour sketches feature the beautiful landscapes, the shops, temples, architecture and the way of life. There are many religions and ethnicity in Mauritius and all that was captured in the sketches. Sometimes you can see Chinese words on the signboards in front of shops, or it could be French words at the cafe. The architecture is influenced the Dutch, French and UK when Mauritius was under their rule in the past.
This really is a wonderful travelogue sketchbook that creates a sense of being there.
