Book Review: Of Strokes & Shades: The Secrets of Digital Art by Laura H. Rubin
Behind the scenes with Laura H. Rubin
Laura H. Rubin (IG | YT | FB) is a freelance artist based in Thun, Switzerland. She's known for her realistic portraits and characters and she's quite popular on Instagram with over 800K followers, at the time or writing.
Of Strokes & Shades is a large format 152-page hardcover published by 3dtotal Publishing. This artbook features artworks Laura has created over the years and also includes stories on how she got into the art industry. I'm always interested in stories of artist careers so I appreciate how much Laura has shared in this book, and it's quite an inspiring read. It's one of those starving artist stories but with a happy ending since she's doing so well now, and has worked with many big companies.
There are many beautiful character designs included, and about a quarter of the book is dedicated to tutorials. So for those who want to learn the digital art techniques to recreate Laura's style and look, this is the book for you. She uses Procreate on an iPad Pro to create her art.
