Book Review: One Thing Leads to Another: The Posters and Art of Dan Stiles
Dan Stiles is an amazing poster designer who has the experience of creating over hundreds of concert posters. His sense of design is very fine tuned. Not only that, his posters have a visual wit.
Collected within this book are 150 posters designed for performing artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Of Monsters and Men and many more. All the artworks are wonderfully printed. The colours are fantastic, striking.
In addition to the beautiful artworks, Dan Stiles also explained his philosophy behind most of his designs. It's very insightful. He would talk about design elements, screen printing, the choice of colours, stories behind the commission and what to expect in the graphic design industry. His knowledge is invaluable to any graphic designer or illustrator. It's interesting to note that he started out in pen and ink and have made an amazing transition to digital art.
While his posters may look simple at times, it is ultimately the strong concept that really wins it for me, especially on the play with shapes and juxtaposition.
This is an inspiring and insightful book on poster design. Highly recommended to artists and graphic designers.
