Book Review: Portraits: Illustrious People by Jorge Arevalo
A trip to the library allowed me to discover this delightful book of caricature portrait drawings by Jorge Arevalo.
Portraits: Illustrious People is a large 162-page paperback published by Promopress that features portrait illustrations of celebrities. The paper quality used is fantastic. The paper is thick, low gloss and the colour reproduction is excellent.
Jorge Arevalo's style is playful, simple and confident at the same time. It's really cool to see how facial features can be reduced to the simplest form and still be recognisable. It's challenging for simplicity to work with a large canvas but here Arevalo's design, composition and striking colours work well. I love the colour schemes, smooth curves, and the play of positive and negative shapes.
Smart illustrations has a way to put a smile onto your face. That's what we have in this wonderful portrait illustration book.
