Book Review: Sketching Outdoors: Discover the Joy of Painting Outdoors by Barry Herniman
Barry Herniman is a full-time artist who enjoys traveling and painting outdoors, en plein air. He has also published several books and the one that you should also check out is Barry Herniman's Travelling Sketchbook, which unfortunately is out of print. Barry has also designed and made his own watercolour palette.
This book is a 144-page paperback instructional artbook published by Search Press. This isn't an instructional book that provides a structured learning course but one filled with tips on sketching outdoors.
This book is great for beginners starting out with drawing, journaling and urban sketching. There is a lot of insight and practical knowledge provided, and many beautiful watercolour sketches and stories included. This is a book you can pick off your shelf occasionally just to browse and get inspired.
There are 5 step by step demos included that covers different subjects and uses different sketching and painting media.
This is a insightful and inspiring book. Even if you already know the basics to sketching and painting outdoors, this book may still be worth buying for the many beautiful sketches included.
