Book Review: Sketching Techniques for Artists by Alex Hillkurtz
Alex Hillkurtz is a storyboard artist with decades of experience and a passion for painting and sketching on location.
Sketching Techniques for Artists is a 144-page instructional book packed with tips on sketching on location and in studio. The subject matter is mostly urban scenes such as architecture, interiors, people you may see on the streets, and some landscapes. This book should appeal to urban sketchers.
There are lots of practical tips on sketching. For example, there are a few pages talking about what and where to sketch. There are details on why certain locations are better, and how you should think about lighting which may change, or situations that may develop spontaneously while you're sketching outdoors.
The book also covers the basics such as composition, perspective, light and shadow. The tips are useful and ones you can use instantly to improve your sketch. The instructions are written in a very engaging manner and easy to understand. Alex Hillkurtz is a great teacher which is no surprise since he also has years of experience conducting art workshops.
This is a wonderful book for beginner and intermediate artists.
