Book Review: The Star in the Forest by Helen Kellock
The only children books I feature on my blog are those that are really beautiful, and The Star in the Forest is one of them. The artist and author is Helen Kellock, an illustrator based in Glasgow, Scotland.
The book's a large format 32-page hardcover targeted at children from ages 3 to 5. The story's about how two kids who went into the forest at night to investigate a falling star.
The mixed media watercolour illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. The colours are gorgeous and I like how they contrast against the darkness of the night.
Watercolour is used masterfully here that really shows off the water media. You can see how the colours blend, the hard edges as the water dries and granulation of the paint. The story scenes are also designed and composed really well. The drawing style is loose and imaginative.
I'm sure kids will love the art. I sure do.
