Book Review: Tahra Art 2: Kim Kyoung Hwan
South Korea concept designer and illustrator Kyoung Hwan Kim (website | facebook) is back with another volume of artworks.
The book's slightly thinner this time, at 244 pages, but still considered thick. It seems to collect his works from 2013-2015 although many are not dated. And the text is in Korean except for the English titles for each artwork.
The bulk of the art are on character designs. Again, many of these characters are designed in the style like those you would see in fantasy video games, such as for Guild of Honor, Deinko's 7 Kingdoms and CyberAgent's games. The characters are those armoured knights, mages, swordsmen, hunters. Some characters are drawn standalone while others are drawn like a full page illustration.
Other than the more serious looking characters, there are also cute ones, such as the cats from Army of Wool, and also other more comic stylised art.
In addition to the coloured pieces, the book also includes pencil sketches so you can see the actual art before colour was added.
Overall, it's a good volume recommended to those who like more Asian style art. To come up with another artbook in 2-3 years is amazing.
