Book Review: Thailand Sketchbook: Portrait of the Kingdom
Thailand Sketchbook is part of the sketchbook series released by publisher Editions Didier Miller (EDM). I've actually had quite a few of their books and I enjoy them all.
This particular edition I have (ISBN 9789814385886) is a paperback edition reprinted in 2014. It's the first time I've seen a paperback edition for their sketchbook series and I hope they will still continue to produce hardcover ones because they are just better, not to mention slightly larger.
The paintings in the book are by Taveepong Limapornvanich, and the text by William Warren.
Thailand is a very religious country and I find it intriguing to read about their history and culture. I've went there with my friends for a sketching trip before so I can feel the a sense of familiarity when looking at the sketches in this book.
The watercolour sketches are wonderful. They showcase the unique architecture of the country from the north, south and Bangkok. There are the temples, floating markets, dragon boats, traditional Thai houses (Jim Thompson's home), shophouses, the more modern buildings and many more.
I love looking at the different architecture styles for the buildings, and the beautiful temple. Makes me want to go back there to sketch again, seeing that there are so many places I haven't been to.
This is a lovely sketchbook. It's timeless, just like the other sketchbooks from EDM.
