Book Review: Yoshitaka Amano: The Illustrated Biography-Beyond the Fantasy
This 336-page hardcover is an excellent biography on Yoshitaka Amano, the artist most popularly known for his art for Vampire Hunter D and Final Fantasy.
Author and biographer Florent Gorges has done a terrific job detailing the life and career of Amano. The book starts right at the beginning with Amano's childhood, his family, on how he developed a liking to draw, then moves on to working at Tatsunoko Production before freelancing as an independent artist, his work with Final Fantasy, his exhibitions and what he's doing nowadays.
There's a lot to read and there are many quotes from Amano published verbatim. It's very insightful to follow his journey from a novice to becoming such a successful artist we know today. You'll get to read about his inspiration, the tools he use, the artists and mentors who influenced him.
Plenty of photos and artworks are included. Some are illustrations he drew for magazines, and the recent large scale paintings.
This is definitely the book to get if you're into Amano's art.
