Review: HIDEAWAYS: More Art from Iraville
Ira Sluyterman van Langeweyde, aka Iraville, is an illustrator based in Munich, Germany. Her illustrations are known for the warm, charming style and according to Loish, "instantly likeable at first glance". I found out about her almost eight years ago on her Youtube channel and I always watch her timelapse creation videos.
HIDEAWAYS: More Art from Iraville is her second artbook released in early 2024 and is the result of a successful Kickstarter fundraising campaign that ended in May 2023. This book is published by 3dtotal publishing as well and is in the same hardcover format and size like the earlier artbook Cozy Days: The Art of Iraville released at the end of 2018.
There are 152-pages in this large hardcover and the pages are matte and non-glossy, which according to Iraville "look much better in a book than on a screen" and that's true.
This book collects almost five years of beautiful illustrations with some tutorials talking about her style, workflow, how she paints and how she makes her own inks. She even has a tutorial on making her own sketchbook in her first artbook.
The artworks are mostly of nature, trees, towns, and some portraits. I just love her masterful use of colour, white space, layering and precision. Quite inspiring. She pays a lot of attention to design, and judging from the amount of work she has created, she is very disciplined, in other words, a true professional.
This is a beautiful book that's worth the money.
