Book Review: The Art of Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie
The cover of this book is nice. It's semi-reflective and the blue background looks metallic. That's pretty cool.
If you are a fan of Captain Underpants books, you'll know the cute, childlike drawing style. The designs and artistic direction for the 3D-animated film may be similar in spirit, but it certainly looks and feels different. The characters still look very cartoony, not like those bubbly round head characters typically seen in other 3D-animated films, like those from Pixar. The artworks in this book is a mixture of painted scenes and those casually drawn character art.
The visual style of this film is really quite different from other 3D-animated films, and that's a good thing.
This book does not have a lot of text. There are stories of how Captain Underpants was created, chapter introductions to the creative process, like story writing, adapting the characters, designing the world and props and there's a short walkthrough on the technical aspect of rigging, modelling, lighting and how visual effects were created.
The book's packed with art with lots to see. If you're a fan of Captain Underpants and the movie, you should check out this book. If you're just a fan of the original Captain Underpants books, I'm not sure what kind of response you'll get. :-P
