Book Review: Fantastic Cities: A Coloring Book of Amazing Places Real and Imagined

Fantastic Cities: A Coloring Book of Amazing Places Real and Imagined - 01

The colouring book craze is still going on. Few days ago, I was at the local bookstore Basheer Graphic Arts and they have a shelf space dedicated to only colouring books. Even Asian colouring books are coming out.

Fantastic Cities caught my attention because it was the largest colouring book on the shelf, about 11.5 by 11.5 inches. It has 60 pages.

I did not buy this book to colour. I bought this book because the illustrations inside are awesome, I love cityscapes and, the pen and ink style is wonderful.

On each page is a huge detailed artwork of a city scene, either real or imagined. Those drawings based on real life is the best because you can really get to see how these cities look and feel like. The imagined pieces are work of art by themselves as well, often using perspective to create patterns out of building elements. I like that the lines are slightly wobbly because that gives them a nice characteristic.

Steve Mcdonald's simple style of just using lines to draw everything appeals to me because that's a style that I use often as well, although never to such large scale. But seeing how good these artworks are is really inspiring and makes me want to draw like that as well.

I would highly recommend this not just as a colouring book but also as a sketchbook.
