Generic 16-inch 2.5K IPS LCD display for US $150
This is a brandless 16-inch 120Hz IPS LCD monitor with 2560 x 1600 resolution, 99% sRGB, 400 nits brightness.
I bought this portable display for just SGD 210 (US $150) on AliExpress including shipping. This is probably the best portable display deal of 2022, and possible 2023 if there's more competitive which means the price may go even lower.
This display has no brand. I believe this is one of those generic products that companies buy to paste their brands over.
These are the items included in the box:
- Display
- Stand
- Foldable case and stand
- 2x USB-C video cable
- Full-sized HDMI to mini-HDMI cable
- Power adapter
- User manual
The video ports are 2x USB-C and one mini-HDMI.
On the other side is the power button and OSD toggle. There are also speakers on both sides but audio quality is so-so as the speakers are not that powerful.
The VESA mount behind is 7.5cm by 7.5cm.
The folding case and stand only has two angles for deployment.
The smaller stand has more angles for deployment.
It is possible to power the display with just one USB-C cable if your laptop or computer can provide enough power. If you use a laptop, it means the laptop battery will drain faster so you may want to attach the laptop to external power.
The display does not have power pass-through so you cannot connect your laptop charger to the display to charge your laptop.
This is not a touchscreen and the surface is matte textured. Viewing angles are good.
I measured colour support for 99% sRGB, 77% P3 and AdobeRGB, and 400 nits brightness. This display has good colours and brightness.
The combination of 16-inch and 2560 x 1600 resolution is not ideal for MacOS. If you use the display at native resolution without scaling, all the UI elements will look small.
If you scale the UI to 1920 x 1200 workspace, the visuals will appear slightly fuzzy.
Windows doesn't have any issues with scaling.
All UI elements look sharp regardless of the scaling. Windows handles UI scaling better than MacOS.
The image quality improvement from 1080P to 2560 x 1600 is more noticeable compared to 2560 x 1600 to 4K.
So 4K resolution isn't really necessary for 15 to 16-inch display.
This display is SGD 210 and is a much better deal than the SGD 650 UPerfect 17.3-inch 4K display I bought a few months ago.
By the way, that Uperfect display has developed 2 lines of stuck pixels and there's no warranty. So that's the risk you have to take when buying brandless products from China from AliExpress.
Any the price for this is so low that even if something happens, at least I won't have lost too much money.
Update Oct 2023: The original monitor I've reviewed seems to be sold out. So you may want to check out this other display on AliExpress instead.
