Review: UPerfect UMax 24 Portable Display (1440P 165Hz)

Review unit provided by UPerfect

The UPerfect UMax 24 is a portable 24.5-inch LCD with 1440P resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. This is the largest single panel portable display from UPerfect. I had to mention single panel because the company also sells double panel portable displays that are much larger.

The price is USD 439 which may or may not include free shipping depending on you location.

If you're looking for a big display that's a bit more portable, I recommend the UMax 22 (right) instead which is 1.63kg, much lighter than the 2.64kg of the UMax 24 (left). UMax 22 is still an impressively big portable display.

Both displays come with a kickstand with stiff hinge that can hold any angle.

I'm quite impressed by this design because now even a 24-inch display can be portable.

There are two rubber feet beneath the display and three under the kickstand.

The display supports 75 x 75mm VESA mounting.

There are actually two downward facing speakers behind the display. Volume is serviceable but audio quality is hollow.

I highly recommend having the display on an elevated stand, either a VESA stand or a tablet stand (shown above), which will provide a more ergonomic condition. A VESA stand will be more stable, but a tablet stand allows you to remove the display more easily.

The stand shown above is just a normal tablet stand.

Ports on the left are mini HDMI and two USB-C video ports. There's USB-C power pass through but it only provides 3-4W so don't expect this to charge your laptop.

On the right side are the 3.5mm audio jack, OSD buttons and micro-USB for OTG.

Design of this display is clean and simple. Bezels are quite thin and there are no visible UPerfect branding. The frame in front is made with plastic, and the back is matte textured metal. Overall build quality is solid enough.

Colours on the display look good out of the box. I measured colour support for 99% sRGB, 74% NTSC, 77% AdobeRGB, 81% P3 and a maximum brightness of 210 nits brightness.

Colour accuracy is decent for a display at this price point. AdobeRGB displays would be significantly more expensive.

Max brightness of 210 nits is sufficient for indoor use, not for outdoors and certainly not near sunlight.

The anti-glare of the matte surface is not too aggressive, thankfully. Viewing angles will affect brightness but not colours. You will get the best visual quality when looking at the display straight on.

2560 x 1440 resolution on a 24.5-inch display will have noticeable pixelation from one arm working distance away. That's not really an issue for me.

I'm sure there will be 24-inch 4K portable displays in the future, but we'll have to wait.

Having such a big display is great for productivity as you can open two big windows side by side. The physical area of the display is actually slightly larger than A3 size paper.

The 165Hz refresh rate makes all animation from the OS look smooth, and of course when gaming you can expect smooth visuals. The experience of gaming on such a big 1440P display with 165Hz is quite satisfying.

Conclusion

The main selling point of the UPerfect UMax 24 is portability. If you don't need your display to be portable, you can just get a proper desktop monitor and there are countless options to choose from.

The UMax 24 is kinda big for a portable display. If you want something a bit more portable, the UMax 22 might be a better choice. 2.64kg vs 1.63kg is a noticeable weight difference.

I can't say much about the durability of this display since I've not used it that long. But I did use the UMax 22 for almost half a year and it works fine and holds up well.

USD 439 can actually get you a really good quality desktop monitor nowadays. But if you need a portable 24-inch display, there aren't many options, and so the UPerfect UMax 24 is a good one to consider if you do need one.
