Book Review: Tony Harris: Art and Skulduggery
This thick volume collects his life of work, over 2 decades worth actually, with some going back to the high school days of 1988. There are pencil sketches, layouts, comic panels, full-page coloured illustrations, some personal photos and even some photo reference used.
The variety of work showcased here is immense. There are illustrations for genre comics, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Conan, Obergeist (his first creator-owned series), 1997 Eisner winning Starman, Spider-man, Fantastic Four, stuff for trading cards, logos, 2005 Eisner winning Ex Machina, private illustrations and other comics and paintings that are still work in progress. There are too much to name.
The art is gorgeous and reproduced really well in this huge hardcover edition. I like particularly the textured colour treatment he applies on some pieces. On almost every page, there will be accompanying commentary, with occasional words from his peers. That's where you read about back stories on the illustrations and interesting stuff like the character on the cover where he's working on for 12 years.
At 312 pages, this book will take a while to go through, reading and marveling at the same time.
Highly recommended to all fans of Tony Harris.
