Book Review: Faeries: Deluxe Collector's Edition
Faeries by Brain Froud and Alan Lee has been reprinted several times since it was first published in 1978. It has over a million copies in print worldwide.
The latest 2010 reprint from publisher Abrams is a hardcover deluxe collector's edition with some new content. There are additional pages with new art and essays by the artists and a foreword by Jane Yolen. There's also a detachable poster featuring the cover art. And there are eight almost A4-size art prints. For the rest of the book, the layout and content remains the same.
The quality of this edition is excellent with the beautiful art wonderfully reproduced. The book itself tells the story of faeries and their magical world, accompanied by illustrations from Brian Froud and Alan Lee. You'll read about good as well as evil faeries, a few other spirits and other folklore beings like dwarfs, leprechauns, and others. This world hidden from humans is not all nice and dandy, almost a direct contrast to Disney's fairies. The mythology is well conceived and together with the drawings makes the characters believable. It's an absorbing read.
This is fascinating book recommended to those who like fantasy art and folklore.
If you already have the previous editions, there's probably not much reason to get this book as the main content is still the same - unless you want the art prints. If not, this is a very good book at a very good price.

Thanks for reminding me about
Thanks for reminding me about this Parka. I once borrowed the Faeries' Oracle from a friend and was smitten by the art. I think this is better and much easier to keep.:)
Thanks for the review! Just
Thanks for the review! Just wondering if this comes shrinkwrapped?
Books don't start out

Books don't start out shrink-wrapped in the first place. It's the book sellers that shrink-wrap them. Not sure about this one, I borrowed it.
Some publishers do shrink

Some publishers do shrink wrap books before they ship them out to the stores; depending on type, size and price. The stores can also shrink wrap them.
