Masters of American Illustration: 41 Illustrators and How They Worked

Pictures and book description are from The Illustrated Press:

From 1989 to 2001, author Fred Taraba was a regular contributor to the graphic arts publication, Step-By-Step Graphics. His column, “Methods of the Masters,” documented the lives and working methods of some of America’s finest Golden Age illustrators. While a number of other writers contributed to the regular column, Fred himself wrote 41 installments. This book is a compilation of those 41 classic articles, which have been extensively reworked and revised with completely new artwork especially prepared for this volume.

Featuring 41 of America's greatest illustrators, this book is a showcase for hundreds of reproductions of original paintings, photographs, and tearsheets of vintage printed ephemeral materials. Each artist's life and career is discussed, and their working methods are described in detail. This book is destined to be a classic, and belongs on the bookself of every serious student of American illustration history.

I really like this. Too bad it's way too expensive for me right now. I'll have to buy this used eventually. Beautiful looking book for sure.

It's a neat book, but i was a bit disappointed. The "how they worked" part mostly can be reduced to two or three sentences like:
He used watercolours, as well as gouache and occasionally tried his hands on other mediums.
He used photographs as reference.
His wife was modelling for him a lot.

Only on rare occasions i found some more in depth information in the book.

A nice read though and i never heard of Saul Tepper before, so it wasn't a complete waste of money.

Yeah, I kinda want a book that goes into specifics. But this book looks great just as a collection of different styles.

Yes, I bought it. And, I do enjoy it. However, there's no step-by-step methods in the book. I was really hoping to see some of their processes illustrated. It's still a good buy if you're a fan of the golden age of illustration.
