Book Review: The Art of Finding Dory
The Art of Finding Dory is a huge improvement to the earlier two Pixar artbooks, The Art of Good Dinosaur and The Art of Inside Out. At least this time, they managed to pack the book with art without dubious use of white space, and there are some commentary too.
Overall, it's a nice artbook companion to the film. The character designs included are only for the new characters such as Hank, Destiny, Bailey, the sea lions and other miscellaneous fishes. There's no repetition of old character designs which is great. They have added additional designs for the reef and coral. As much of the film happens in the Marine Life Institute, you'll get to see more artworks of the set designs. Daniel Lopez Munoz's scene paintings are wonderful.
A number of pages are devoted to colour scripts and storyboards. There are colour scripts for selected portions of the film to show the colour transition. Some of the storyboards are of deleted scenes.
It's a worthwhile purchase if you're a fan of the film or collect artbooks like this. I would still rank The Art of Finding Nemo above this book though. The main reason is because I really love the look and feel of artworks created with traditional medium. The beautiful pastel drawings by then production designer Ralph Eggleston are still some of my favourite concept art from any Pixar movie. Most of the art in this book are created digitally. There are a couple of pencil drawings by production designer Steve Pilcher and I kinda like those.
