Book Review: The Art of Horizon Forbidden West
Welcome to the Forbidden West
The Art of Horizon Forbidden West is the companion artbook for the game sequel to Horizon Forbidden Dawn released in 2017.
The artbook for the first game was one of the top artbooks from 2017, and this artbook is easily one of the best for this year too.
This is a large format 224 page hardcover published by Dark Horse. The pages are low gloss and binding looks good, durable.
This book is packed with beautiful concept art for characters, props, environment and enemies. The highlight is how the artists merge tribal cultures with sci-fi and fantasy to create the designs. The blend of old world with new technology creates an interesting aesthetics and feel to the designs. The post-apocalyptic is beautiful and haunting at the same time when you know the story behind the game.
The artworks are gorgeous and reproduced huge. There are a few sketches and many detailed illustrations for characters and the world. These are artworks that will make you pause and admire. The amount of time and effort used to create these stunning visuals must be massive.
Commentary from the artists and designers is sparse. Anyway, the main highlight of the book is the art. How I wish there are more books on the production of games instead of just artbooks.
This is a wonderful artbook that I can recommend easily for fans of the games, concept artists and those who collect artbooks.
