Book Review: Awaking Beauty: The Art of Eyvind Earle
This 176-page hardcover is actually the official catalog for the 2017 Walt Disney Family Museum exhibition of the same name.
The book features selected artworks from the career of Eyvind Earle. It's not exactly a biography as it is not that detailed, but more like an introduction to this artist that not many may know of. He contributed to the background illustration and style of early Disney movies.
There are artworks from before he joined Disney where you can see that he's still looking for his style. There's a whole section on the art that's created for Disney and the style is very stylised and distinctly Disney. I love the designs, colours and the overall look of all pieces. And lastly his commercial works are featured. This is where he did some graphic design, illustrations, paintings, scratchboard art and even sculptures.
My favourite pieces are his landscape paintings that appear right at the back of the book, the ones with really vibrant colours and blacks. That's something magical about the way the colours were used there.
This is a nice artbook tribute. Recommend to those who want to learn more about Eyvind Earle and see more of his art.
