Book Review: RAINMAN CONCEPT ART BOOK [NOT AFRAID] Vol.1
I've given you a preview of the Rainman Concept Art Book back in March and I now have the book in hand. That preview wasn't that accurate in representing the contents, so here's a more complete review.
Rainman is a Korean artist with an interesting online alias.
This artbook is made possible because of a successful crowd funding compaign. He released on 500 copies so it's a limited while-stocks-last edition.
It's a large hardcover artbook, slightly larger than A4 size, 184 pages with thick paper. The book was released back in September 2013.
About half the book is filled with his personal paintings. Most are in the painterly style with subjects such as landscapes inspired by street scenes, mountains, towns, and there are also a few portraits. From what I can tell, it's mostly digital painting. I saw the Artrage software being mentioned.
The paintings look a bit rough, feels a bit unfinished but even in this rough unfinished form, they look very good mainly because of the composition and lighting. I like many of the street scenes and landscapes paintings.
The section collects the concept art he created for some fantasy setting. The are all environment artworks of other worlds, such as magical forests, ruins, flying ships, and other exotic places shrouded in mysterious light.
Then there's the video game art he created for Pico Online and Princess Maker Social. Included are designs for props, buildings and background. There's an old school RPG fantasy vibe to them with the buildings created mainly of bricks. What you don't see are character designs.
The last section is a walkthrough of his painting process. The text is all in Korean though. That's followed by a brief but beautiful gallery of fantasy artworks from guest artists.
It's a great artbook. I'll recommend it more to those who like the painterly style and environment art.
