Book Review: Day of the Dead and Other Works
*Thanks to Korero Press for providing me with this book for review
Sylvia Ji is a painter based in San Francisco who focuses on portraiture art. You can check out over 10 years worth of art on her website.
The concept for the portraits in this book is based on the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead, a day where people remember those who have died. It's part of the culture for people to have their faces painted and in this book we get to see how Sylvia Ji does that through her portrait paintings.
The 112-page hardcover features a collection of work from 2005 to 2015. The portraits featured are evocative, mysterious and sometimes dark due to the nature of theme. Some faces are painted with a ghostly appearance while others have an almost Victorian look. There's nudity by the way.
Sylvia's skill as a portrait artist is masterful. Each painting is striking and able to command attention. Some of the original pieces are as large as 48 by 48 inches. The paintings in real life probably would have looked terrific. Most are painted with acrylic, mixed media on wood panel.
This is an artbook with fantastic work from Sylvia.
