Book Review: Drawing Expressive People (The Urban Sketching Handbook)
This book is one to get if you want to, as the title suggest, draw expressive people.
Róisín Curé (pronounced RO-sheen CYUR-ay) is an illustrator and teacher based in Galway, Ireland. She started urban sketching in 2012 and is an avid and prolific sketcher. Her previous book is the 170-page hardcover An Urban Sketcher's Galway which I enjoyed a lot.
Drawing Expressive People: Essential Tips & Techniques for Capturing People on Location is the full title of this book, and this is part of the Urban Sketching Handbook series, books that feature tips relating to certain aspects of urban sketching.
If you've not see Róisín Curé's sketches before, definitely check out her blog, Instagram and Facebook where you can see her beautiful sketches which are updated frequently.
This book is a collection of tips for drawing people, figures and expression. The book's not a structured guide to figure drawing so it works best as a compliment to other artbooks which you may already have. Unlike other USk Handbooks, most sketches in this book are from Róisín herself with a few from contributed sketchers around the world. The tips are insightful and practical, tips and techniques you can adopt easily into your own sketches. If you want to draw better looking human figures in your sketch, this is the book to get.
It's a wonderful book I can recommend easily.
