Book Review: Learn to Paint in Watercolor with 50 Paintings by Will Freeborn
I've been following Will Freeborn's blog for a while now. So it's great to see that he's putting out a book. I like his art, in particular his pen and ink watercolour sketches.
This book is for beginners who might want to learn watercolour but find it too intimidating. It's an instructional book that's not too technical.
It starts by introducing the tools and materials you need. That's followed by a quick guide to colour mixing and short demonstration to various basic wash techniques.
The highlight of the book are the 50 step-by-step exercises that you can easily follow along. Instructions are included for each step and even the colours used are listed. The exercises are spread across different chapters and each exercise focuses on a specific subject. For example, it can be drawing your materials, flowers, landscapes, people or using a limited colour palette, using simplification and other techniques.
It's a great idea to teach by having students do some hands-on exercise. Learn by doing is effective. And at the end of the 50 exercises, one would probably have a nice collection of artworks to look back at.
This is an accessible and hands-on instructional book that should be helpful to watercolour beginners.
