Book Review: Presidio Gateways: Views of a National Landmark at San Francisco's Golden Gate
Perfect Presidio
The ultimate book on the Presidio for the armchair traveller. Though it's primarily a photo book the first twenty-three pages give a brief but succinct look backwards to 1776 when it was a Spanish outpost. This is followed by a fold-out map then there are photo chapters based round the North, South, East and West Gateways. The photos, mixing historical buildings and the natural environment of the Presidio, are exceptional. Robert Ketchum, in particular, has some quite stunning images throughout the pages.
A real plus for me with this book was the excellent design and production. Kit Hinrichs created just the right feel with the layout and typography so that the photos and especially the graphics in the front pages historical essay work for the reader.
If you can't get to see the wonders of the Presidio this beautiful book is the next best thing.
