Book Review: Sights and Secrets Sketches and Paintings of Hong Kong

Sights and Secrets Sketches and Paintings of Hong Kong - 01

This book was published in 2003, so that's quite some time ago. It has been republished a few times and I can see why because the subject is timeless.

The author and artist for Sights and Secrets is Lorette E. Roberts. This is a more general sketchbook about Hong Kong when compared to her other one Sketches of Soho which just focuses on Soho area.

This large 68-page hardcover features many beautiful watercolour and pencil sketches of scenes around Hong Kong. There are the more rural areas away from the city, different mailing boxes, temples, rooftops, scenes of people going about with their work, boats in the harbour, and many more. It's more like a snapshot of different places in Hong Kong.

Accompanying the sketches are personal observations recorded by Roberts that give a little insight to the sketches, explaining a bit about the subject. It's interesting find out about other people's culture, although at time the writing is too brief and doesn't explain the why.

I like sketchbooks and it's enjoyable to go through the drawings. Check out her other sketchbooks as well.
