Book Review: Spilling Open: The Art of Becoming Yourself

Book Review: Spilling Open: The Art of Becoming Yourself

This is a very difficult book to review. It's a scrapbook journal by Sabrina Ward Harrison who writes about her journey from adolescence to womanhood.

On the photos, paper cutouts and whatever white space available, she fill them with pieces of her life. The book probably isn't suitable to read from cover to cover because handwriting isn't easy to read, but hey it's a scrapbook.

I didn't like the content. I can't relate to any. But that's maybe because I'm a guy.

Anyway, here are some random snippets from the book for you to get an idea:

  • Who do u wear a mask for today? I think masks say "Approve me", "Accept me", "Love me"
  • Every girl is a princess. That's a fact. No matter how slender, pretty, smart, popular or nice.
  • I can hear Bob Dylan in the background singing 'I want you so bad'.
  • Real Real Real Real Be Real
  • Before my 22nd birthday, I would wish to commit to grow younger to let go of my fear as I learn about love.
  • Mom + Dads anniversary is today, 20 years of hanging out together, the sound of early morning coffee + ideas, having children...
  • I find myself comparing a lot — thinking "Oh I should be more like her"
  • Sometimes I am unable to buckle down my euphoria
  • Sweet potatos and camomile tea
  • I think god leaves me alone to let me find my own strength
