Book Review: An Urban Sketcher's Galway
I'm a fan of Roisin Cure's sketches so when I read that she has a book out, it was an instant purchase for me. I've been following her blog too long. She's really good at drawing and colours.
An Urban Sketcher's Galway is a 170-page hardcover travelogue-style sketchbook on Galway, the harbour city on the west coast of Ireland. Roisin Cure is an artist from Ireland and actually graduated with an M.Sc. in Earth Sciences from the National University of Galway. She then started a family, got busy, but her love for art eventually drew her back into drawing after she discovered Danny Gregory's Everyday Matters. Since then, she co-founded Urban Sketchers Galway and has been teaching art workshops to children, adults and even at the Urban Sketchers Symposium.
What I've just written were all from the book. There's a lot more to read. I was delighted when the book was thicker and had more text than I expected. I love travelogue style sketchbooks. They have a way of bringing you to other parts of the world with just words and sketches. And this book does a terrific job at that.
The number of sketches and amount of text included in this book is quite astonishing. It must have taken an incredible amount of effort to undertake a project like this. The sketches are beautiful, colourful and full of life. There are many places included in this book. There are the touristy places, less touristy places, shopfronts, inside the shops, cafes, fish market, beaches, harbour, graveyards and more.
All the sketches were accompanied by Cure's personal stories and brief info on the places she sketched at.
This is a very inspiring book. Definitely one of my favourites of 2019.
Highly recommended.
