Book Review: Walking TOKYO Sketches of Popular and Memorable Sites
I got to know of this book through Amazon's recommendations.
This is a 72-page paperback that features the artworks of Japanese artist Rumiko Hotta.
On the cover, it says it comes with 8 postcards and 2 greeting cards. Upon flipping inside, I found that you actually have to use a scissor to cut out those postcards and greeting cards. They are just normal pages with dotted lines that are not perforated. The artworks on those postcards are featured further on later in the book. I'm not sure if anyone would want to cut pages off their books.
There are 48 sketches of Tokyo, selected from more than 200 that Hotta has drawn over a period of 30 years. They look to me like media media work created with watercolour and coloured pencils. The style is like sketches with watercolour washes. I'm not sure whether I like the style or not so I recommend that if possible, it would be great for you to flip through before buying.
The places featured are not all touristy. They feel like places you would discover only after staying for a long time. They are not the usual places featured in travel guide books. The writeup are short captions describing the places.
Overall, the book feels like one that's designed to be sold at airports as souvenirs.
