Review: YUNZII B75 Pro wireless mechanical keyboard

YUNZII has sent me another keyboard to review and it's the YUNZII B75 Pro wireless mechanical keyboard. Price of the keyboard at the time of review is USD 79.

Bottom line

This is a beautiful keyboard with wonderful typing experience. The backlight looks gorgeous and is a key selling feature. Battery life with the lights on all the time, even during the day, is around 2 days, or the keyboard can last for weeks without lights.

Prior to updating the firmware, the keyboard had problem waking from sleep. After updating the firmware, it seems like the keyboard is always on and doesn't sleep, so battery would drain quite fast within days.

Design

The keyboard comes in three colours: Grey, Black-Green and Pink-Purple. Mine's the grey model and it looks beautiful. I like the simple and clean design which also looks kinda classic with the grey colour theme.

There are 82-keys with one knob. This mechanical keyboard is gasket mounted with 5 layer padding, double-shot keycaps, precision-tuned stabilizers and pre-lubricated mechanical switches.

The back has a slot to keep the USB-A receiver, a switch for Bluetooth, cable and 2.4Ghz connection. There is no switch for Mac or Windows keyboard layout and you need to use Fn + A (Windows) and Fn + S (Mac) to switch.

The foldout feet provides two additional heights. Rubber padding beneath the feet provide good grip on the tablet.

Milk switch

The switch that I've selected is the Milk linear switch and here are the specs:

• Operating force: 45±10gf
• Pre-travel: 2.0mm±0.6mm
• Total travel: 4mm

The keys and switches are rather quiet which means they are good for using in office or environment with other people around. Typing experience feels light and satisfactory to me. I was able to type quite fast.

The keyboard is hot-swappable and can use 3 or 5-pin switches.

One of the main highlights of this keyboard is the beautiful backlight that makes it look like the keys are floating on light. This is unlike other keyboards with south-facing LEDs where you can clearly see localised lights. The backlight with the Yunzii keyboard works together to create this seamless glow. There are 20 lighting patterns or effects to choose from and you can switch between the options easily using keyboard shortcuts.

Driver

Only the Windows driver is available.

The driver allows for customisation of the keys, shortcuts, lights and can even create macros. I didn't really test the driver much as the keyboard works fine without the customisation.

Downsides

Battery life if you use the lights all the time is just 2-3 days. If you just use the lights at night, then battery life will be longer. If you don't use the lights at all, battery life is one month.

My keyboard with firmware 106 could not show battery life with the Fn + Right Ctrl keyboard shortcut. After upgrading to firmware 109, that shortcut was able to work. The firmware upgrade app is in Chinese though, but if you have to update your firmware, just click the right bottom button.

The keyboard also had this problem where it cannot wake from sleep, but that was also fixed by the firmware. However with the new firmware, it seems the keyboard is no longer able to sleep and battery will drain quite quickly, so the workaround is to shut off the keyboard after each use or day. Or just use it as a wired keyboard.

Conclusion

While the keyboard is well made and beautiful, typing experience is great, there are some firmware issues which unfortunately affects the user experience. It seems that after the firmware I've installed, which was already removed from Yunzii's website, the keyboard can no longer sleep and that drains battery really quickly to the point that it's probably better to just use this as a wired keyboard.
