Review: Kuxiu 5,000 mAh Solid State Power Bank

Review samples provided by Kuxiu

Kuxiu has just released two wireless power banks that use solid state batteries, both with 5,000 mAh battery capacity. There are the USD 79.99 Kuxiu S1, and the USD 89.99 Kuxiu S2 with Q2 wireless charging.

Main advantages of solid state vs the common lithium ion found in power banks is there's significantly less fire risk with the use of a non-flammable solid electrolyte. Solid state batteries are said to have longer lifespan although I'm not sure whether that actually refers to the remaining battery capacity with usage.

There's also lesser risk of physical damage. Kuxiu has a video showing the battery being cut and another video with the battery being smashed by hammer.

Here's how Kuxiu describes their product:

This 5000mAh power bank supports 15W wireless fast charging and provides approximately 1.2 full charges for an iPhone. Even after 1,000 complete charge and discharge cycles, its battery performance remains stable with virtually no noticeable degradation, showcasing exceptional durability.

This is a difficult product to review because when people look at a power bank, they just look at the battery capacity, price and maybe weight. Many people probably don't care about the technology within.

Everyone appreciates good value for money so price is important. This solid state power bank cost more than two times of lithium batteries that have higher battery capacity. So the people likely to buy this would be those who have an appreciation for technology.

Design

If you do a search on "advantages of solid state battery vs lithium ion battery", you will see the many advantages of solid state battery. But this technology is still new, and this power bank is the first generation, so not many of those advantages or potential are actually fulfilled.

For example, solid state battery is said to have much higher energy density compared to lithium ion battery for the same weight and volume. However, this Kuxiu power bank isn't that much lighter or have a much higher battery capacity compared to another 10,000 mAh power bank that I have.

The charging speed is fine. You can get up to 15W charging for wireless and 20W with cable.

Build quality looks good. The design comes in two colours: black and natural titanium. I'm not sure if the frame is made with metal or plastic but it looks metal enough with the shine.

This power bank is made for iPhones that support magnetic charging. It can also be used with other phones that support magnetic charging but the battery alignment may not be perfect.

Power button's located below and can be used to check the battery level from the four status lights.

This power bank has a battery capacity of 5000mAh 3.8V (19Wh) and rated capacity of 3000mAh (5V - 2.1A).

This power bank can provide my 11-inch iPad Pro with a 40% charge (wired), Samsung S25 Ultra with 49% charge (wireless), and an Android tablet with 5500 mAh battery capacity up to 72% (wired).

Wireless charging does generate wasted energy as heat. So to get the maximum charge out from the power bank, it's better to use cable charging.

A laptop with 28Wh battery capacity gets 10% charge and stops due to lack of wattage.

Conclusion

While the solid state battery is said to be safer, that's not to say that lithium ion batteries are dangerous. Lithium ion batteries have to be made with high safety specifications because these things are ubiquitous and found almost everywhere. So the safety feature of the solid state battery to me would be a nice to have, and not a must have, unless you know you'll be using the power bank in extreme conditions.
