Book Review: 北条司漫画家25周年記念 自選イラストレーション100
Tsukasa Hojo (北条 司) is a Japanese artist who drew one of my favourite manga, Family Compo. It's simply the best romantic comedy around, even when compared to movies. He has also drawn many other serialised work like Cat's Eye, Angel Heart and City Hunter. Unfortunately, his comics are not translated to English.
The art book is a hardcover and comes with a translucent plastic slipcase. It celebrates the 25 anniversary of his work with a personal selection of 100 illustrations. The splash pages are from each of his different manga titles. All the illustrations are printed on matte art paper.
One thing you probably noticed is his main characters always look slightly similar. It's like the same actor acting in different movies. But well, one can't fault his technical skill and knowledge of anatomy. He also happens to be the mentor of Inoue Takehiko. Amazing.
I've come to associate Tsukasa Hojo's work with brilliant storytelling. This art book certainly makes me want to revisit his older books again. In that respect, this art book is a little underwhelming compared to his manga, which of course isn't a fair comparison.
It's a nice book but recommended strictly to fans of Tsukasa Hojo.
