Book Review: セブンスドラゴン 設定画集 (7th Dragon Visual Materials)

セブンスドラゴン (7th Dragon) is a RPG game for the Nintendo DS. The character design in the game belongs to the Chibi type.

7th Dragon Visual Materials is a 240-page paperback that collects the concept art of the game.

They are mainly character designs. There are the Chibi game profiles as they appear in the actual game, and also the concept sketches. The characters are divided into different classes like Rogue, Samurai, Knight, etc, and also by gender. While the in-game characters are super-Chibi, the concept art shows them slightly less so — 6 heads height. The designs are beautiful and cute. Costume designs are plentiful and great.

There's a chapter called World but it has only two pages of environment design. The rest talks about the characters in these worlds.

The section on monster designs is quite short with only 24 pages. There aren't any concept sketches but just art which I suspect is direct from the game. The designs are nice but the reproduction aren't sharp enough. There's no pixelation though, just a tad soft on the sharpness.

The last few pages have more art that don't fit in other chapters. These are like character splash art.

The designers are Mota and Akifumi Yamamoto.

Good book for those who like the Chibi type of game art.
