Book Review: Muscles in Motion: Figure Drawing for the Comic Book Artist
I'm glad I borrowed this from the library because this book isn't worth the money.
All the figure drawing examples included are from some exercise videos. Not really a problem except that the drawings aren't very good. They are sketchy and the muscles aren't defined well enough. On some sketches, it's hard to make out the form of the muscles. It can get so bad that sometimes the front and back of a person is hard to differentiate.
The poses are pretty stiff and static as well. The examples are very limiting because they are just exercise poses.
This book seems like a personal practice sketchbook of the author Glenn Fabry, with notes to, perhaps, himself. There aren't much useful instructional text also.
Not recommended.

Hahaha What the?
You're better off looking at bodybuilding pics online if you want to draw muscular he-men or women. Thanks for warning us. I ordered the Loomis book from Amazon, can't wait.

thats a shame. a book on how muscles behave in motion could really fill a gap in figure drawing. bodybuilders are great reference for how muscle mass distributes, but since most photos display them holding a static pose, this could have a bad effect on drawings.

That's exactly what it is. it was actually published in hardcover form as "Monograph". For some reason, it was re-published in softcover form as some kind of instuctional figure drawing book.
I have to disagree about the figures being stiff and static. I think they're actually well gestured and quite kinetic for the most part. Also, some of Fabry's notes are pretty insightful.
Oh wow. I'm so glad I checked
Oh wow. I'm so glad I checked your page for reviews on this first. you saved me XD (so far 90% of my art books are from your recommendations. oh, and add my drawing device to that haha! I really appreciate the thoroughness). LOL this was made a decade ago it seems, but still relevant! Stay safe!
