Book Review: Quick & Lively Urban Sketching by Klaus Meier-Pauken
Quick & Lively Urban Sketching is a quick introduction to urban sketching, or sketching on location. It's best suited for beginners who have some knowledge of drawing and who want to apply those to outdoor sketching. This book talks about the different ways you can go about doing so, the materials that you need and the things to look out for.
This book is mostly a descriptive book with a few one-page demonstration. There are lots of beautiful sketches provided by the author Klaus Meier-Pauken, and the accompanying text talks about the techniques and thought process. It's quite insightful. However if you want to follow along, it could be difficult because there aren't many step-by-step instructions. So you should treat this as an idea book or a book for inspiration and in that case it actually works well.
The book talks about tools, colours, image composition, landscapes, human subjects, and what makes your sketches look lively. There are many little tips throughout the book, and I think it's a nice book to refer back to once in a while.
There are only 64 pages in the book though, and it really left me wanting more. The book is priced very affordably as a result. It's a nice book, but could do with more content as I really love to read and learn more from what the author has to offer.
